DUNDAS SQUARE

Who needs Times Square in New York when we have our very own here in Toronto. Welcome to Dundas Square- Toronto’s new entertainment venue.

In the heart of downtown, it ignites beauty and energy.

The Toronto Life Square, open in late 2007 is adjacent to both Toronto’s Eaton Centre and Dundas Square.  It has a total of 13 stories- ten above ground, and three below ground.  Featuring 20,000 square feet of billboards on the outside (along with the world’s largest contoured high-definition screen), it houses a 24-screen AMC Theatre and an 11,000 square foot Shoppers Drug Mart, Wolfgang Puck’s Cafe, Future Shop and Adidas will also be opening in this entertainment/shopping complex.

Across the street, Dundas Square has been open since 2002 and has a life of it’s own.  With 22 small fountains that flicker constantly, a stage that holds free concerts, and a half-price ticket booth, the crowd it brings is impressive.  The sleek granite surface is used for special events (sometimes spanning across Yonge Street) and the patio-style seating area allows for a relaxing taste of downtown during the summer months.

Just when you think they could add no more, City TV will be joining the bustle of the Yonge-Dundas district.  Overtaking the Olympic Spirit building, they will broadcast directly from the heart of the city.

NATHAN PHILLIP’S SQUARE

In front of Toronto’s City Hall lies Nathan Phillips Square. Host to many events throughout the year, the square is located right beside Toronto’s Eaton Centre.  The three historical arches that cover the reflecting pool were built to commemorate those who fought for freedom.  The “Freedom Arches” and beautiful architecture of the old and new City Hall are what attract both tourists and residents of Toronto.  A perfect canvas for photography, Nathan Phillips Square and City Hall are beautiful both day and night.

If you’re looking to grab a quick bite to eat while you’re there, just walk to Queen Street and you’ll find Steve’s “Homemade Chunky Fries” truck that serves up amazing poutine, burgers and hot dogs – open from January to December.

In the summer the square is bustling with people who are taking in concerts, public exhibitions or just having lunch on a sunny afternoon.  The festivities continue through the fall and winter months with fresh produce available at the Farmer’s Market (June through October), and a skating rink complete with rentals (mid-November to mid-March).  Even in the coldest months of the year, you’ll find people skating on the popular ice rink that has been transformed for the season.

The various annual events include Toronto’s L’Oreal Fashion Week, WinterCity, First Night New Year’s festivities and more.  In late November, visit on a Saturday night to enjoy a fireworks and lights show open to the public.  For  more information on Nathan Phillips Square, visit www.toronto.ca/city_hall_tour/nps.htm

Easy to get to by subway, just exit the Queen station and walk a block west.  Parking is available for those who drive- underneath the square is one of the worlds largest parking garages with enough space to hold more than 2000 vehicles.

If you’re always ahead of the game and want to know what’s in store for Spring 2008, Toronto’s L’Oreal Fashion week is definitely the place to find it. This year’s event will be showcasing designers like Ryerson’s own Joeffer Caoc, as well as Canadian designers Stephen Trigueros, David Dixon, Ula Zukowska and many more.
Area Magazine headed to the L’Oreal Fashion tent at Nathan Phillips Square to check out the scene. Inside, the crowded space was filled with designers, media, and the trendiest fashion followers. With a full house, and a flashy runway, who would expect anything less as Toronto supports our growing fashion industry.

The event is just heating up. Fashion week continues until Saturday, October 27 with busy days and gala nights.
